Even the stars opt for shared holiday homes

Owning a co-shared holiday home allows you to not only enjoy the pleasures of ownership but also share the responsibilities that come with maintaining a second home. Isn’t this idea even more meaningful when it involves friends and family? After all, it lets you create lasting memories together for years to come.

The concept of shared property ownership is far from new. From DIY partnerships to high-profile celebrities, many have embraced the idea of co-owning holiday homes. This approach isn’t about wealth—it’s about using resources wisely and adopting a more conscious way of living.

Take, for instance, the renowned shoe designer Christian Louboutin. Along with his business partner Bruno Chambelland, he co-owns a historic 13th-century French château in Vendée, which has been in Bruno’s family since the 17th century. Among its features is a renovated oak barn housing over 8,000 pairs of Louboutins, used for archival purposes. Of all Louboutin’s residences—spanning Paris, Portugal, Egypt, and Los Angeles—it is this château, “painted with history,” that he holds dearest.

Similarly, Bono and The Edge, members of the legendary band U2, jointly purchased Villa Les Rose, a stunning four-story seaside mansion in Ezé, back in 1993. Their bandmates, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., often joined them at the villa for rehearsals and studio recordings. Fans even managed to secretly record unreleased tracks when the creative energy got lively.

A shared holiday home isn’t limited to individuals or small groups. Celebrities Cindy Crawford, Rande Gerber, and George Clooney, for example, built adjacent homes on a shared property in Los Cabos, Mexico. Before this collaboration, they stayed in hotels, which rarely met their expectations and required advance planning. Their joint retreat, Casamigos (meaning “house of friends”), became a haven for relaxation and camaraderie. The name even inspired their successful tequila brand, now a billion-dollar enterprise—proving that some of the best ideas are born outside the office.

Owning a holiday home with friends and family can create a unique and magical space where cherished memories are made. Co-ownership often means sharing the property at the same time, unlike arrangements with strangers, which typically require exclusive usage. However, finding friends with similar budgets, preferences, and schedules can be challenging, and agreeing on the finer details (like the color of a sofa) isn’t always straightforward. To avoid conflicts, it’s crucial to discuss potential challenges and establish a solid legal agreement before committing to shared ownership.
